VENCE

The main gate to old Vence is the porte du Peyra, which gives onto the place du Peyra, once a Roman forum, and the place du Frene with its venerable ash tree. As well as Matisse, many other artists lived in Vence (Dufy, Chagall, Dubuffet and Soutine among them) and you might see some of their works among those of other local painters in the temporary exhibitions at the Villeneauve Chateau on this square. Walk up from the main square, the place du Grand Jardin into the Ara quarter, where the Chemin du Calvaire is dotted with tiny chapels dating from the early 18th century.
